Why Anna Smrek makes an impact as a rookie for the Badgers volleyball team | College volleyball
“I think she has the potential to be one of the greatest players in college volleyball if she continues to improve at this level,” Hilley said. “She has immense potential as a blocker and hitter. When she reaches and touches the high ball, no blockage can stop her. It’s gonna be fun to watch.
It remains to be seen whether that future will continue to be on the safe side or whether it will come back to the middle. The Badgers have some flexibility there, with Danielle Hart planning to come back from a torn ACL and Devyn Robinson having had success in the middle after a freshman All-American season in the spring on the right side.
For his part, Smrek is good with either place.
“To be honest, I’ve always liked the right side,” she said. “I did a little in the club so I knew a bit about that. I think what’s good about this team is that there are a lot of people who can play anywhere, or who are willing to make those changes and adapt to be on the pitch and s ‘help each other.
Sheffield sees Smrek playing almost everywhere in the front row over time.
“I hope she is without a position,” he said. “We will hit her everywhere. We will make it hit on the left. She can go up there and get over some boulders on the left side. Clearly, you can make her run on rapids and slides behind. Where is a weakness in a defense, let’s go and let’s go.
